Harlem My Home

In the early 1900s, particularly in the 1920s, African-American literature, art, music, dance, and social commentary began to flourish in Harlem, a section in New York City.

The intellectuals pulse of Harlem  was most accurately taken at the 135 Street branch of the New York Public Library for poetry novels and plays.

Saturday nights were the passion of the community.

The mid-1920s goldfield the Harlem Renaissance. Most of the signs of the times were encouraging.

The assertive energy of the New Negro Movement was evident throughout the land.

Harlem had many successful bootleggers and racketeers, and so many political and religious characters.

Real political power eluded Harlem. Harlem's Republican candidates made strong but unsuccessful runs in 1924 and 1928.

The Depression took an effect on Harlem but not all at once.

Harlem produced many famous leaders, musicians, intellectuals before its demise due to the great Depression. The Harlem renaissance can also be viewed as a state of mind.
