Using NC LIVE

1. Go to the Shawu home page.  www.shawuniversity.edu

2. Click on “Libraries.”  Click on "James E. Cheek Learning Resources Center."  Scroll down; click on “NC LIVE.”  Click “Browse Resources” then click “Alphabetic.”  Click “Academic Search Premier.”

3. If you are off campus, you will be asked to select your institution (Shaw University).  Then you will be asked for a password, which will be communicated in class because it is privileged information.  The password changes every semester.

4. Now you are at the Search Page.  Type your keyword or phrase.  Note:  a phrase must be typed in quotation marks:  “animal experimentation”.  A search can be limited by using AND between terms:  human AND cloning.

5. Under “Limit Your Results,” click the “Full Text” box.  Other limitations are optional.

6. Click “Search.”

7. You get a Results List.  Note the formats, PDF or HTML.

8. Read the titles and click on one you want to read.  The screen will go to the citation; scroll down to reach the full text.  DO NOT QUOTE FROM AN ABSTRACT !

9. Click “Back” to return to the Results List to choose another article.

10. You can have articles sent to your email to read later without logging onto NC LIVE again.  Of course, you can print out articles.

Copy down the following information for a complete MLA Works Cited entry for an article:

1. The author’s full name.  If there are two or more authors, make sure you get them in the correct order.  Only the first author’s name is reversed on your Works Cited page.

2. The title of the article.  Article titles are always enclosed in “quotation marks.”

3. The title of the original source.  Newspaper, magazine, and journal titles are underlined.

4. The date of publication.  Express a daily or weekly like this:  20 Jan 2002

5. The page numbers in the original source, if given.  (NOT the page numbers of a printout.)

6. The database links, in order.  If you follow the directions above, this will be Academic Search Premier.  EBSCO. NC LIVE.

7. The database subscriber and location.  Usually, this will be Shaw Univ., Raleigh, NC.  If you access NC LIVE at a public library or another university, cite that place.

8. The date of access.  (The date you looked it up).  Express it in the same form as the date of publication.

9. The web address for the database.  If you follow the directions above, this will be http://web10.epnet.com.  Or something that looks a lot like that.
