Strategies for Revision

1) Put in what you omitted
    a. Works Cited page (You do not need the bibliography.  That was just for the Prospectus assignment.)
    b. Your essay should have a title, something more interesting than "Cloning" or "Animal Experimentation."  Be creative.
    c. You need a header with last name and page number; paper clip or staple to hold the pages together.
    d. additional pages or paragraphs (See "Development" below.  The expectation is that the text of your essay will be 4-5 pages long.)

2) Development
    a. "Why?" "Explain." "More." "Comment here." These comments in the margins mean you should add sentences to a particular paragraph or you should add paragraphs to your essay. The assignment calls for 4-5 pages; if you wrote only 3, you need more development.
    b. Make sure your paragraphs really explain your argument. Connect your argument to your thesis.
    c. Connect ideas between paragraphs. Write transitions.
    d. Look for places where your argument contradicts itself; understand your topic.  Be clear about introducing opposition arguments so that you don't sound contadictory.

3) Research
    a. Use the required number of sources. 1 from the book and 2 from outside, minimum.
    b. Use NC LIVE, not msn or yahoo, etc.
    c. Write proper introductions.
Review: How to Handle Quotations and Paraphrases
    d. Quote accurately.
    e. If the quotation is over four typed lines, it should appear in block form (indented on the left side).
    f. Paraphrase well.
    e. Write "sandwich" paragraphs. Review.

4) Works Cited page: Review
    a. List works alphabetically
    b. Each entry must be complete
    c. List only those works actually used in the essay
    d. List all those works actually used in the essay
    e. Label the page correctly

5) Grammar and Spelling
    a. There is no excuse for spelling errors; use the spell check.  However, YOU must know the difference between homonyms such as there/their and where/were
    b. If you missed more than 5-6 points on grammar, you should go to the AAA Center for review of the concepts you have trouble with.

Revisions are optional, but here are the rules:
    a) They are due in one week.
    b) You must attach the original score card.
    c) A conference is optional, whether or not you had one earlier.
